Kendall and Aaron Russell

Today on the podcast - The Russell's! Kendall (@k.adair.r and @KayyyP3) and Aaron (@a_a_ronrussell and @FatRonRussell) are Penn State Volleyball’s all-time great power couple and have become one of Italy’s royal volleyball couples since moving their lives to Perugia, and for good reason. Aaron has been motoring through his third year on Sir Safety Perugia, which happens to be my current team as well, and Kendall has been alongside every step of the way, putting in all the real work to make them both go, behind the scenes. Kendall is a former libero and multiple-time NCAA champion at Penn State University, where she and Aaron met. Aaron is a former All-American and 2016 Rio Bronze Medalist and Best Outside Spiker, who is playing in his third season overseas.  They were absolute champs and allowed me to invade their home, right above mine here in Perugia, to get into the details of their lives, where they’ve been and who they see themselves becoming. We sat around their kitchen table and snacked on veggies and drank local wine because that's what fuels long nights of conversation. All raw and uncut fun.

Listen in and enjoy!!

Dustin Watten, Part Two

Today on the podcast - Part Two of special guest Dustin Watten! Dustin Watten (@DustinWatten and dustinwatten.com) is a Libero for the USA National Team, currently playing professionally overseas in Radom, Poland. Dusty is commonly known amongst the volleyball community as one leading a movement towards veganism. He’s actively outspoken on Instagram and on his personal blog toward this end, but this is just a small scoop in the whole container of “Nice Cream” that is Dustin Watten. Dustin truly wants to make a difference for the next generation, sharing a lot of his daily practices on either of these channels including Stoic philosophies, tips and tactics for young Liberos looking to improve their own games, and a whole lot more. It seems like every time we get together, Dustin and I end up having these incredibly insightful conversations. I learn so much from Dustin on a regular basis about appreciation and the quest for better, and this time was certainly no different. As will be a theme throughout the show, he shows why he’s a great mentor of mine as not only a seasoned veteran presence on the national team, but someone who walks his talk in all aspects outside of volleyball life.

Part Two of Dustin and I’s conversation ranges from a breadth of topics including:

  • The rise of sports nutrition to a field of greater importance in the college athletics community
  • The growth of men’s volleyball at the collegiate level, pointing out the exciting steps forward in spectatorship in recent weeks.
  • His favorite spots in the Southern California area to grab some vegan grub.
  • His “guilty pleasure” redefinition as a vegan, how he and his fellow vegans love their vegan junk food. Spoiler alert… it’s not exactly your Momma’s typical “junk food”…
  • The importance of moderation and variance in a strict diet such as he follows, in order to prep for situations where he doesn’t have a choice in what he’ll get to eat.
  • Cravings: how his cravings have morphed since making his plant-based diet change.
  • The important distinction between coming at healthy eating changes from a positive frame of mind versus coming at the same changes from an approach loaded against negative consequence.
  • His favorite references (documentaries, podcasts, blogs) that got him kicked into the vegan lifestyle and kept him committed to the cause, including two upcoming films we can look forward to in the future. A few he mentioned- Forks Over Knives, Cowspiracy, What The Health, and Earthlings.
  • The two directions we seem to be heading food-agriculturally, albeit slowly as a culture: veganism and the “clean meat” movement.
  • A paradigm shift he experienced while playing in Brazil, rooted in his insight from an older woman working minimum wage cleaning his club’s bathrooms every week.
  • The daily practices he can’t do without, nutritionally and otherwise. “Must”-urbation. ;)
  • His new favorite phrase, Best Day Ever.
  • His go-to Bowlful. Which turns into two bowlfuls. Rules already getting broken here on the podcast!
  • His last parting wisdom for you.
  • And a whole lot more.

Preach, Dustin, Preach!!!

Dustin Watten, Part One

Part 1 of Dustin and I’s conversation ranges from a breadth of topics including:

  • What he’s been reading, most notably within the field of stoicism, and how those reading choices have helped him along the way in his professional career.
  • Dustin’s humble beginnings on the mean streets and sands of Long Beach as yet another late-comer into the world of volleyball who has found his stride and made it to the professional level.
  • His foundation of creativity and experimentation when starting with volleyball at his house and on the beach, leading him to be able to handle all obstacles thrown in his path in his volleyball journey.
  • His daily practices which include his “List” of daily actionables and accountabilities.
  • His original inspiration and vision as to why he chose to become a vegan athlete, and how he has found strength and growth in his particular nutritional path since that conversion.
  • What his life as a vegan athlete living in Europe has been like, how his diet adapts for road matches, and what kind of opportunities he was working with in France and now in Poland.
  • And a whole lot more. Whip out that notebook!

I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did.

Austin Einhorn

Today on the podcast - special guest Austin Einhorn!

Austin is one of my favorite people on planet Earth. He has become a great mentor and friend for me as well as his serving as my movement coach, in a more official sense. Austin and his performance business, Apiros Performance, are working almost non stop in trying to redefine athletes’ limits - and not just the ones that he works with in his gym in Santa Cruz, California. Austin has a wealth of knowledge in so many different backgrounds that one podcast hour is definitely not doing him and his ideas justice (be on the lookout for more conversations including him in the coming months on the show). His bowl is definitely full, so to speak. So, if you’re a fan of people who could be classified as “students of the game”, you’re going to want to listen to this podcast.

Austin and I get into much good stuff, including:

  • What his thoughts are on “higher education” institutions.
  • His experiences as a volleyball player at the collegiate level.
  • His transition in fueling for performance and experimentation from college meal plans to now following the ketogenic diet.
  • Training philosophies in the volleyball community, with regards to amount of training, etc.
  • His mission and objective at Apiros, and what types of people he tends to work with and want to work with
  • His daily practices with regards to eating habits, specifically mentioning the importance of probiotics and prebiotics.
  • His brand new arm swing progression video series, available at vimeo.com/ondemand/apirosvb for purchase and download.
  • “Transition” and its important role in the scheme of a young person’s life, especially that of the athlete figuring out his or her place in the world.
  • So much more.

Episode 1: Allow Me to Reintroduce Myself!

In this area, you'll find the show notes of every episode. Sometimes I'll give you just about word-for-word transcription, other times I'll just give you the general gist of the episode.

Episode 1 is a total introduction to the podcast, what my whole idea with this thing is, and how I can start to learn, along with you, to tailor our desires of the show towards one another. Some of the things I touch on in this episode include:

- An introduction to the concept, the muse, the idea that became and is Bowlful of Soul

- An introduction to myself, if you have zero clue as to who I am or what I'm doing seemingly talking at you for no reason. OR maybe you do have an idea as to who I am but want to get to know me better through this specific avenue. Either way, I talk about me and my story a little bit.

- I talk about healthy eating/nutrition as a concept in general.

- I talk about the connection that is our mind, body, and soul and how it relates to food and information.

- I tell you about the life of a pescatarian and how that has had an impact since I made the change about 5 months ago.

- I give you some of the goals of the podcast, with regards to its format, its ideal guests, its purpose, and even what it's been inspired by.

Lastly, I want to thank you again for listening. I hope you've already subscribed, rated, and reviewed this sucker. If not, THERE'S STILL TIME AHHH!
